Fragrant Gardens are lots more than Roses!

Usually, The prettiest flowers in a garden are the stars of the show. It's natural, we're often drawn directly to the beauty a well conceived garden offers. But what about the other senses? A fountain or windchimes can add some subtle sounds. The texture of plants, shrubs, and succulents can be felt. The taste of herbs or fruit. But what about the sense of smell? Is it missing or misplaced? Do something about it! We've compiled a list of plants and their characteristics that you can choose from to start or enhance your own Fragrant Garden. Don't be afraid to experiment!. Try combinations. Let your taste be the guide. Too overpowering? Trim some back or reduce the density of the strongest fragrances. When plants are chosen carefully, any garden can be a fragrant garden. If you're willing to acidify your soil as you would to grow azaleas, there's a marvelous summer-blooming shrub that deserves your attention. Called summersweet, it has glossy green leaves and spikes of spicy, sweet-smelling white or pink blossoms that last for several weeks. Best yet, it blooms in mid-to late summer, when few other shrubs have flowers. This is just an example of the ideas we hope to inspire.
